Day 5: 4

We revisit the Styx River Forest area, just outside Armidale for this day.

Pioneers will move to the Styx River to work on navigation techniques and to rehearse working together as a team.

All Pioneers are to meet at the Pioneers shed in Brown Street at 8.45am for a 9.15am departure. Pioneers advanced are expected at 8:15 for an 8:30 departure (TBC)

You will need to bring:

  • Compass
  • pen or pencil
  • Watch
  • walking boots
  • hat
  • wet weather gear
  • 2L water bottle
  • eating gear (knife, fork, spoon and plate)
  • sunscreen

And you'll also need:

  • a change of clothes
  • sleeping bag
  • toiletries
  • towel
  • some old shoes/sandals to wear if in the water
  • your pack and tent

Camping gear is needed in case you get "geographically embarrassed" and need to overnight in the valley. It's also good training for the end of year trek.

Pioneers will return to TAS by 4.30-5pm

Our goal will be to visit 2 checkpoints on the river, and return to a specified pickup area, making lunch en route.

We specifically need to focus on navigation techniques today, as there were some (ahem) fairly poor efforts last time.

Advanced will set up radios for Pioneers arrival. Radios at Big Anne, just north east of the Pantons Point/Wattle Flat road junction and at Eely Creek Fire lookout. Two groups will walk to predetermined areas on or nearby the river where Pioneers will check in.
