This should be short and catchy and reflect the essence of what the students will be doing
Tim Hadfield (Yr 5 teacher TAS)
Kane Lorimer (PST)
Shanna Wales (PST)
Linley Cornish (UNE)
Science and Technology (SAT)
NV S3.7
Conducts their own investigations and makes judgements based on the results of observing, questioning, planning, predicting, testing, collecting, recording and analysing data, and drawing conclusions.
UT S3.9
Evaluates, selects and uses a range of equipment, computer-based technology, materials and other resources to meet the requirements and constraints of investigation and design tasks.
VA4 Gains satisfaction from their efforts to investigate, to design, to make, and to use technology.
VA5 Works cooperatively with others in groups on scientific and technological tasks and challenges.
PP S3.4
Identifies and applies processes involved in manipulating, using and changing the form of energy.
Students will make a DVD to demonstrate their learning as a result of engagement in the science topic 'Sailing, Sinking, Soaring'
iDVD
video cameras
laptops
Assessment - technology will be used to capture and demonstrate their science learning and the product (DVD) will be assessed
Revised focus: DVD will not be made. Instead, web pages will be constructed with photos and podcasts about their science learning. Therefore: Assessment - technology will be used to capture and demonstrate their science learning and the product (web page) will be assessed
Higher engagement in the science learning and their self-evaluations because of the integration of ICT and the opportunity to demonstrate their learning in a different (more exciting) way
Amended plan (12 June): Students are not more engaged compared with previous years but they are demonstrating more of a focus on explaining 'why' things happen rather than 'what has happened'. Having to construct a web page is definitely encouraging this shift in focus. Any amendment will therefore involve maintaining this focus on explaining why.
