The
engagement of students in learning using ICT, was determined during
observations of year 11 students. The observations occurred in four consecutive
lessons on modern history over four weeks in year 2009, in Australia.
The
aspects of engagement that were measured included behavioural (adhering to
rules and following directions); emotional (enthusiasm and/or excitement), and;
cognitive (self-directed undertaking of activities). These were measures on a
scale of 5 ranging from never to always.
While
there is a need for further investigations to be able to deploy these findings
for use, data reveals that students become more engaged and interested in
learning as they use ICT to research, edit and publish their work in a Wiki.
The Internet provided resourceful information for students’ research and the
Wiki provided a vehicle for creativity and application of their technical
skills. There
is potential for the Wiki providing access to a wider audience, development and
sharing of ideas as well as opportunities for per assessment. The Wiki will be
used to asses student’s work.
The
challenges include the development of measurements of engagement and
motivation, as well as recording the observations without affecting the lesson
progression.
