Reflecting on engagement

I would encourage teachers and pre-service teachers to reflection on the engagement of stduents in the classroom and any issues in recognising and recording data about this engagement.

The year 5 class is an enthusiastic group who have enjoyed the incorporation of ICT into their science lessons. Although not always on task, most of the students are engaged and on task for most of the time. They are given quite a lot of freedom in this lesson and are using it quite effectively.

Year 3 is full of enthusiasm to use ICT in their lessons. One student is not engaged unless he can use ICT. Most of the groups keep on task but there are times where they needed to be reminded of what they where should be doing. Some of the students are coming up with fantastic questions for their interviews. It should be interesting to see what the finish product looks like.

As Victoria has mentioned above Year 3 are very excited about their HSIE unit. Engagement in these lessons is most definitely higher than in other standard lessons. I tend to use a lot of ICT integrated into many lessons but as this unit involves film making the kids are over the moon. The concept of working in cooperative groups is relatively new to these kids so we have had to work through developing skills in this area. This may effect the level of engagement as some students tend to be distracted while others are taking their turn to edit bits of film or type ideas. Apart from this, most of the talking is on task discussion. They do get a bit carried away with ideas so the noise level is very high. The students have been very honest in their responses and it is amazing because we had a lot of hurt brains during filming which I would have thought involved less thinking and synthesising than the planning and editing. When I spoke to the subjects being interviewed the kids came up with a lot of impromptu questions and when we looked back at the story boards they had really changed a lot of their direction. It was difficult for the pre service teachers to record data on all students during filming as we split up into groups.

Hilary's description of the engagement in her classroom sounds rather like what I've observed in Tim's classroom. As I wrote in the 'reflections on implementation' (instead of here where I should have written it), it is going to be difficult to separate engagement related to use of ICT from engagement related to the fun activities (filling balloons with water, making rocket-propelled cars, and so on). I'm waiting to see what actually gets onto the DVDs, rather than a lot of silly faces and 'look at me' behaviours. I have every confidence that Tim can work miracles!
