    Introduction

    Philosophy

    This is a Vocational Education and Training (VET) course provided in collaboration with the Motor Traders Association (MTA). It provides students the opportunity to gain introductory knowledge and skills in the Automotive Industry, which will provide a basis to move into a career in the field. The course is based on competencies. A competency is a combination of knowledge plus skills demonstrated to the required standard, and being able to repeat it time after time without assistance to industry standard.

    Specific course requirements

    Students will require steel capped safety boots, and blue cotton drill coveralls, labelled with student's name.

    Our work in this subject for this year

    This year we will work on a wide range of vehicles, mowers, small motors etc. Working in collaboration with the MTA, students will be performing vehicle log book services (minor & major) for their client base, including the general public.
    In 2012, we will complete various assessment Units. Six of these are outlined below:

    Inspect and service cooling systems It is vital that modern vehicles are running to government environmental regulations and manufacturers specifications. The cooling system is vital to this. Students will be able to understand how it works and maintain and repair as required. Yes

    Service, maintain or replace batteries

    Be able to test, maintain, repair and replace batteries in accordance manufacturers specifications Yes

    Service final drive assemblies

    Service final drives, clutches, flywheels, axles Yes

    Carry out soldering of electrical wiring/circuits

    Be able to use solder in relation to electrical wiring and circuts Yes
    Carry out repairs to single electrical circuits
    As modern electrical circuits become more and more complex in modern vehicles students will have an understanding of how they work, be able to repair or replace as needed. Yes


    Our first unit:

    Our first unit is Communicating in the Workplace, commencing Week 1 Term 1.

    What is this unit looking at/doing/investigating?

    In this unit students will learn what skills are required for communicating effectively with clients, other staff members and other Industry related persons. Knowledge of oral, verbal and written communication skills will be gained so students will be able to communicate effectively both face-to-face, over the phone and in writing.

    What we are trying to achieve?

    We are providing the opportunity for students to gain knowledge and develop skills leading to their ability to demonstrate competency in a each of the units of competency.

    How will success in this unit be measured?

    How effectively students are able to utilise knowledge gained in their every-day communication skills, both within, and external to, an industry setting. Further assessment of these skills will be measured during Mid course Exam and Yearly exam (HSC 2 unit).

    Where does homework fit in here?

    Each unit has a corresponding component which requires completion in the student's own time. Due dates will be set for completion of this work. Students are expected to manage their time to ensure deadlines are met.
