Unit 2
What is the Unit called?
This unit is called The Legal System – The Individual and the Law
How long is the Unit taught?
The unit constitutes 30% of the Preliminary course and its study will last approximately nine weeks.
What are we looking in this Unit?
Students learn about the effects and social functions of the law on individuals in their everyday lives. Specifically, they will examine their rights and responsibilities under the law and also legal issues surrounding of an individual’s use of technology.
What are we trying to achieve?
This second Unit is essential to a good understanding of the two year Legal Studies course, providing a practical and functional overview of the law’s operation in Australia. Students will broaden their understanding of the differences between Criminal and Civil Law and continue to investigate relationships between legal institutions, learning why laws are necessary in society. To develop a relevant appreciation of legal operations in Australia, it involves legal issues surrounding the use of technology: privacy laws; copyright; mobile phones; cyber bullying.
How will we measure success in the Unit?
In-class, prep and formal assessment tasks will determine each student’s success in this Unit. All will be required to do internet research, access departmental and library resources, make their own notes and occasionally present their findings to the class in tutorial sessions.
Where does prep ‘fit in’?
Prep is important not only in terms of course completion, but also in terms of confident understanding of its content. Studying the Law requires accessing files, making notes, researching case law and the decisions of courts. In order to prepare themselves for class, students will be required to read relevant background materials, answer questions and prepare for class discussion.
