Unit 1 - Narrative Studies - Lockie Leonard
How long will the unit be taught for?
5 weeks
What are we looking at/doing/investigating?
This unit focuses on exploring the novel Lockie
Leonard and other short stories and poems
that consider the theme of 'growing up'. Adolescent experiences and changes are
considered in the different narratives with students finding a real connection
with ideas explored in the texts. The unit culminates in a creative writing
tasks that tests the imaginative abilities of the students.
What are we trying to achieve?
This unit introduces to the boys the idea of
exploring a theme or concept in English, which orientates them to the
changing nature of the discipline as they prepare for entering senior study. The assessment task will test their creative writing skills, with comprehension, spelling, grammar and punctuation tasks completed in
conjunction with the study of the texts.
How will we measure achievement?
The unit culminates in a creative writing task that sees the students adapt the story of Lockie Leonard by re-writing a section of the novel from the perspective of another character. In addition to this assignment there will be a number of other class activities, tests and work that will assess the literacy skills of the students.
How does homework fit in the unit?
The boys are aware that whilst some class time is allowed for reading the novel, the bulk of it will have to be read at home. There will also be homework activities and writing tasks set, which may include any work that is not completed in class.
How can you assist your son's studies?
Encourage him to read for enjoyment and join in reading the novel with him. Read the novel for yourself and discuss the issues Lockie Leonard raises, especially about growing up and maturity (if you're feeling brave).
How can you give us feedback?
Feedback will be supplied to students orally both
individually and following whole class tasks. Written feedback will be supplied
in response to homework tasks and assignments when appropriate. Parents can
contact me on aoconnel@as.edu.au to discuss any aspects of this unit or their
son's progress.
