    Terms 3 and 4: Year 7 Geography

    What is current unit called?

    Investigating Our World

How long does is this unit taught for?

This unit will be taught for 8 weeks.

What we are looking at doing and/or investigating?

Geography is an investigation of the world which provides an accurate description and interpretation of the varied character of the earth and its people. It is a key discipline through which students develop the ability to recognise and understand environmental change and the interactions which take place in our world.

Geography has many dimensions, two of which are emphasised in this syllabus:

The ecological dimension considers how humans interact with environments

The spatial dimension focuses on where things are, why they are there and how people interact differently with environments in different places.

Geographers investigate the opportunities for human activities, the constraints placed upon them and the impacts of these activities. The study of Geography allows students to perceive the world in a variety of ways and helps them make sense of a complex and changing world.

What we are trying to achieve?

    Students will learn to:
    • identifies and gathers geographical information
    • organises and interprets geographical information
    • uses a range of written, oral and graphic forms to communicate geographical information
    • uses a range of geographical tools
    • demonstrates a sense of place about global environments
    • describes the geographical processes that form and transform environments
    • explain how geographical knowledge, understanding and skills combine with knowledge of civics to contribute to informed citizenship.

How will we measure success in this unit?

The assessment task for Term 3 will be an information brochure on a World Heritage site.

    The task:

UNESCO has decided to only fund one world heritage site to be preserved from 2011 onwards. Students select a World Heritage Site and produce a brochure aimed at persuading people to save that particular site.

Students will be encouraged to produce evidence of their learning in a range of formats including written, visual and ICT.

Where does homework fit in here?

Homework or "Prep" is a vital part of the learning process and it is important that students complete all homework tasks in preparation for major assessments and classroom activities. Reading set material and revision of key concepts is a key way that students can build in their geographical skills. It is also vital that students develop regular study patterns that will prepare them for success in senior high school.

How can I assist my son?

You can assist your child by asking questions about work they are doing in class and getting your son to show you his work on the class website or their personal blog. Being aware of assessment tasks and monitoring your son's progress is another way that we can work together to ensure that they are keeping on top of their work and doing the best that they can.

How can you give us feedback?
